How Do I Get My Coin Collection Appraised in Las Vegas?

The first step is simply to bring your collection to Sahara Coins & Precious Metals at 7293 West Sahara Avenue, Suite 106, in Las Vegas.

Please leave coins in their current holders, albums, flips or original packaging whenever possible. Do not clean, polish or attempt to improve their appearance before bringing them in. Cleaning a collectible coin can permanently damage its surfaces and reduce its value.

Our team will examine your collection, identify important pieces and explain the factors that influence value. Depending on the size and purpose of the appraisal, we may recommend calling ahead or scheduling a dedicated appointment.

Coin Evaluations and Written Appraisals

Not every customer needs the same type of service. Sahara Coins offers two primary options.

Free Verbal Coin Evaluations

A verbal evaluation can help you understand what your coins are and their approximate current market value. This is often the best option for customers who:

  • Have inherited a coin collection

  • Are considering selling coins or currency

  • Want to identify potentially valuable pieces

  • Have a small collection or individual coin

  • Need help separating collectible coins from common material

  • Want to understand how a dealer determines value

There is no obligation to sell your collection simply because we evaluated it. Our goal is to provide clear information so you can make an informed decision.

Written Coin Appraisals

Written appraisals may be available for qualifying:

  • Estates

  • Trusts

  • Insurance documentation

  • Legal or financial recordkeeping

  • Large or specialized collections

Written appraisals require more time, documentation and research than a verbal evaluation and are billed at an hourly rate of $85 an hour with a minimum of one hour. Please call Sahara Coins before visiting to discuss the collection, the intended use of the appraisal and current scheduling.

What Types of Collections Can We Evaluate?

Our experienced team works with a broad range of numismatic and precious-metal items, including:

  • United States coins

  • Foreign and world coins

  • Certified PCGS, NGC and CAC coins

  • Raw or uncertified coins

  • Morgan and Peace silver dollars

  • Gold coins

  • Silver coins

  • Rare and key-date coins

  • Proof and mint sets

  • Coin albums and complete sets

  • Errors and varieties

  • Ancient and historic coins

  • Tokens and medals

  • Paper currency

  • Gold and silver bullion

  • Estate and inherited collections

If you are unsure whether your items fall within our areas of expertise, call us at (702) 367-4360 before visiting.

How Is a Coin’s Value Determined?

The value of a coin is not based on age alone. During an evaluation, our team may consider:

Date and Mintmark

Some dates and mintmarks are significantly scarcer than others. Two coins that appear almost identical can have very different values depending on where and when they were produced.

Condition

A coin’s condition can substantially affect its collector value. Original surfaces, remaining detail, luster, marks, wear and overall eye appeal are all important considerations.

Rarity

Mintage figures provide a starting point, but surviving population and current market availability can be even more important.

Metal Content

Gold, silver and platinum coins may carry value based on their precious-metal content in addition to any collectible premium.

Collector Demand

Market demand changes over time. Certain series, dates, varieties and types of coins may be more actively sought by collectors.

Certification

Coins authenticated and graded by respected third-party grading services may be easier to identify, compare and value. Certification does not automatically make a coin valuable, but it can provide important information about authenticity and condition.

Recent Market Activity

Current dealer markets, auction results, wholesale activity and comparable sales can all help establish an appropriate value range.

Coin Appraisal vs. Coin Grading

A coin appraisal and a coin grade are related, but they are not the same thing.

Coin grading evaluates a coin’s condition and assigns a numerical grade based on established industry standards. An appraisal considers the coin’s grade along with rarity, metal content, collector demand and current market activity to estimate its value.

Sahara Coins can help you understand whether professional third-party grading may be appropriate for a particular coin. We can also assist customers with qualifying submissions to respected grading services such as PCGS and NGC.

Not every coin should be submitted for grading. Our team can help you compare the potential benefits with the grading and submission costs before you make a decision.

Inherited and Estate Coin Collections

Receiving an inherited collection can feel overwhelming, especially when the coins are unfamiliar or have been accumulated over many years.

You do not need to organize, identify or research every coin before bringing the collection to us. Whenever possible, keep the collection in its existing albums, boxes, holders and envelopes. Original notes, receipts and documentation can also provide useful information.

Our team can help:

  • Identify the major components of the collection

  • Separate bullion from collectible coins

  • Locate potentially important dates and varieties

  • Explain which items may have value beyond their metal content

  • Discuss whether third-party grading may be worthwhile

  • Provide a verbal evaluation or qualifying written appraisal

  • Explain possible selling options without pressure

Should I Clean My Coins Before an Appraisal?

No. Never clean, polish or chemically treat a coin before having it evaluated.

Even gentle cleaning can leave scratches, alter the surface or remove the original patina collectors expect to see. A coin that appears dark, toned or dirty may still be desirable in its original condition.

Bring the coins exactly as you received or stored them.
