American Silver Eagle
The official Silver Bullion coin of the United States, the American Silver Eagle was first released by the US Mint in November, 1986. The weight and purity of the American Silver Eagle is guaranteed by the US Government.
These stunning coins contain one troy ounce 99.9% pure Silver with a face value of $1 and are the only Silver coins allowed in an IRA (Individual Retirement Account).
The design of the obverse is based on the exquisite and unique original “Liberty” design of Adolph A. Weinman that also graced the celebrated 1916 issue Walking Liberty Half Dollar - still considered by many to be one of the finest designs of American coinage ever minted.
The obverse depicts the iconic “Lady Liberty” in a flowing gown walking in full stride leftward, right arm extended and her left holding a bouquet of laurel and oak branches. The sunrise appears on the lower left with an American Flag billowing behind her. The word “LIBERTY” appears on the upper full half edge above Lady Liberty with the date below her. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” appears on the right, next to Lady Liberty.
The reverse, designed by John Mercanti is quite different from the original Weinman design. Mercanti’s design features a Heraldic Eagle with outstretched wings and Union Shield on chest.
In the Eagle’s right talon, an olive branch and in its left, a bundle of arrows which is very neo-classic of early issue American coinage.
In the Eagle’s beak, a waving banner which appears the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (Latin meaning “Out of Many, One”). Immediately above the Eagle’s head appears a cluster of thirteen stars commemorating the thirteen original colonies of the United States.
Appearing on the upper full edge above the Eagle reads the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and below the Eagle, the weight and denomination, which reads; “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR”.
