Replacement Banknotes (aka Star Notes)

Replacement Banknotes

Replacement Banknotes are actual banknotes which are printed exclusively to replace faulty or error notes. This is a governmental mechanism used in the currency printing process to keep accurate control of the serial numbered banknotes and the monetary amount of banknotes being printed per batch.

As a quality control method, examiners find defective notes during the printing process, after the serial number has been overprinted; those notes are then pulled from the batch with their serial numbers recorded. The defective notes are then replaced with other banknotes, printed specifically for the purpose of replacing the defective ones, but bearing different serial numbers than those of the defective notes.

This process provides continuity in that the amount of banknotes being printed stays the same in each batch produced and saves time and money from having to re-print the exact same serial numbers of the defective notes.

The Replacement Banknotes are printed with their own serial numbering system (new serial numbers representative of serial numbers from defective banknotes removed from previously printed batches) and are distinguishable by the use of a “*” in front of the serial number, hence the nickname or alias “Star Notes”.

It is highly rare that one would find a Replacement Note bearing the same serial number as that of its defective predecessor although they are known to exist and would be extremely sought after and command a significant premium.
